Ask the Expert: Chun on AI and Computational Drug Discovery and Development

Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences Professor Joanne Chun, PharmD ’93, PhD ’96, is the director of the School of Pharmacy's MS in AICD3 (Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Computational Drug Discovery and Development) program, the first of its kind in the United States and the first master’s program in the school.

MS in AICD3 learners study matters like machine learning, deep learning, pharmacokinetics, real-world data analysis, omics, and AI ethics. Then, they apply those skills in capstone projects with industry partners or within UCSF labs.

UCSF Magazine caught up with Chun, who is also the School of Pharmacy’s director of postgraduate education programs, to learn more about how AI-based research benefit patients, and how the MS in AICD3 program is developing leaders who can think across disciplines and translate that knowledge into real-world impact.
