BTS welcomes Christopher Hernandez, PhD
It is a pleasure to announce that Christopher Hernandez, PhD, will be joining the UCSF faculty in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences on January 1, 2023. Hernandez’s primary appointments will be in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the UCSF Musculoskeletal Center. He will be the next director of UCSF’s Health Innovation via Engineering Initiative (HIVE) and will hold an additional affiliation in the Benioff Center for Microbiome Medicine.
Recently, he received the Boosting Research Ideas for Transformative and Equitable Advances in Engineering (BRITE) Fellow award for his applications of engineered living materials. Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the BRITE Fellow award creates opportunities for experienced researchers to branch out into new fields or areas of investigation in order to advance scientific discoveries.
Hernandez, currently a professor at Cornell University’s Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, will make an excellent addition to our institution. He brings to UCSF his expertise in material properties and remodeling of human bone. His research focus is on the effects of the microbiome on bone and joint disorders, periprosthetic joint infection, and the biomechanics and mechanobiology of bacteria.
