Desai wishes mentor Chien happy retirement

Chien, international giant in bioengineering, celebrates a lifetime career

We are delighted to announce that, after 62 years in the field, Shu Chien, MD, PhD, professor of bioengineering at UC San Diego is retiring.

Chien was recently feted at a two-day symposium on October 3 and 4 in his honor at the Lifetime Academic Achievement Celebration at UCSD. Among those paying tribute, UCSF Chair of the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences Tejal Desai, PhD, recalled how Chien had encouraged her early in her career. “He remains an inspiration to this very day,” she said.

“In 2016, when UCSF hosted the annual BIC (Bioengineering Institute of California) symposium, Dr. Chien enthusiastically encouraged our young scientists and attended every session,” said Desai, 17th BIC symposium chair.

Chien was awarded the National Medal of Science and has been elected into all three National Academies (Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine).

“Dr. Chien is an absolute giant in the field. We will miss him. We wish him and his wife K.C. a long and happy retirement,” said Desai.
