Academic Programs

Faculty members in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences teach PhD graduate students, who will be tomorrow's science leaders, provide PharmD and MD professional students with the exceptional science foundation they need to deliver increasingly complicated therapeutics to their patients, train clinical scientists, and support the postgraduate education of scientists.

PhD Graduate Programs

Our department administers 3 multidisciplinary, PhD graduate programs:

  1. Biological and Medical Informatics (BMI)
Our faculty focuses on the biological informatics component of the BMI graduate program, which is the key component of the Integrative Program in Quantitative Biology. Bioinformatics relies on techniques from applied mathematics, informatics, statistics, computer science, physics, chemistry, and biology to study biological composition, structure, function, and evolution at the molecular, cellular, and systems levels. It comprises all aspects of gathering, storing, analyzing, predicting, and disseminating the corresponding information.
  2. UCSF/UCB Joint Graduate Group in Bioengineering (UCSF/UCB JGGB)
The PhD in bioengineering is jointly offered by UCSF and the University of California, Berkeley (UCB). The interdisciplinary JGGB graduate program combines the resources in biomedical sciences at UCSF with the excellence in engineering, physical, and life sciences at UCB.
  3. Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics (PSPG)
The PSPG graduate program leads to a PhD in one of the most quickly expanding and dynamic fields of contemporary science. The program is multidisciplinary and brings together faculty members from genetics/genomics and the pharmaceutical sciences.

PharmD and MD Professional Programs

Our faculty members teach in 3 of UCSF's health science professional programs:

  1. PharmD
The PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree program in the UCSF School of Pharmacy is a full-time, 4-year course of study that prepares students for careers as clinical pharmacists who provide direct care to patients. The curriculum offers 3 pathways, including one in pharmaceutical sciences.
  2. PharmD/PhD
There is a growing need for clinical scientists in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries to design and carry out clinical studies. Only a few universities are in a position to train top-flight PharmD scientists. We are one of these. This joint degree program is offered to qualified 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-year UCSF Doctor of Pharmacy students.
  3. MD
The MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree program is a full-time, 4-year course of study that prepares students for careers in medicine. The program is built on the premise that students who play an active role in their education emerge with deeper knowledge, better skills, and a clearer sense of how they want to practice medicine.

Postdoctoral Programs

Postdoctoral scholars add to the intellectual rigor of our department while furthering their own science.

  1. Postdoctoral Scholars - General Information
Faculty members usually prefer to receive directly from respected research colleagues the names of prospective postdoctoral scholars. Some UCSF postdoctoral positions are listed on the campus' Graduate Division website. See: UCSF Postdoc Positions
  2. Clinical Pharmacy & Pharmacology Postdoctoral Training (CPPPT)
The goal of the CPPPT program is to develop clinical scientists who will be experts in clinical pharmacology research. The program trains PharmD, MD, and PhD scholars in laboratory and clinical investigations focused on therapeutics. This NIH-supported training program is a cornerstone for the development of future clinical and translational scientists. For more information contact:
